Obtaining Jamaican Citizenship by Registration

A Commonwealth national who has resided legitimately in Jamaica for at least five (5) consecutive years, and is of good character, may make an application to become a Jamaican citizen.

 

Adults

The application form for Registration as a Citizen of Jamaica for an adultshould be completed in duplicate and signed before a Notary Public, Justice of the Peace, Commissioner of Oaths or a Consular Officer at the Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa or the Consulate General of Jamaica in Toronto.

 

The documents (either the originals or duly notarized) required to apply for Jamaican citizenship are:

 

·        Applicant's original Birth Certificate.

·        Passport on which the applicant originally entered Jamaica and current passport, if different.

·        Work permit or exemption certificate or contract.

·        Evidence of community activities in which the applicant is involved, for example, service club, etc.

·        Tax Compliance Certificate.

·        Two (2) passport-size photographs certified by a Notary Public, Justice of the Peace, Commissioner of Oaths or a Consular Officer at the Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa or the Consulate General of Jamaica in Toronto.

·        Verification of income.

·        Recent bank statements.

 

Once all documents are submitted in good order, the application process begins. Where an application is approved, the applicant will be required to pay the Canadian equivalent of J$7,000.00 to complete the process.

 

            Minors

The application form for Registration as a Citizen of Jamaica for a minorshould be signed before a Notary Public, Justice of the Peace, Commissioner of Oaths or a Consular Officer at the Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa or the Consulate General of Jamaica in Toronto.

 

The form should be read carefully it must be completed by a parent or the Guardian of the Minor and signed in the presence of by a before a Notary Public, Justice of the Peace, Commissioner of Oaths or a Consular Officer at the Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa or the Consulate General of Jamaica in Toronto.

 

The documents (either the originals or duly notarized) required to apply for Jamaican citizenship are:

 

·        Minor’s Birth Certificate

·        Minor’s Passport

·        Parents’ Marriage Certificate

·        Parents’ Passport

·        Evidence of parent(s) Jamaican Nationality (if citizen of Jamaica)

·        Work Permit of parent(s)

·        Tax Compliance Certificate of parent(s)

·        Two (2) passport-size photographs certified by a Notary Public, Justice of the Peace, Commissioner of Oaths or a Consular Officer at the Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa or the Consulate General of Jamaica in Toronto.

·        Two (2) references to sponsor the application. These persons should be Jamaican by birth and should not be a Civil Servant, a relative, a lawyer or an agent of the applicant.

 

Applications must be done in person.

 

Processing Fee:

The application fee: One Hundred and Ten Canadian Dollars (CAD$110.00).  This fee is non-refundable.
